João Berchmans Correia Serra graduated in Law from Universidade de Brasília (Brasília University) – UnB, in 1984, concluding his graduate studies in Procedural Law at Associação de Ensino Unificado do Distrito Federal (the Federal District United Teaching Association) – AEUDF in Brasília in 1986, where he was a professor for Introduction to Legal Studies in 1987. He was a council member of the Brazilian Bar Association, in the Federal District - Brasília, from 1994 to 1999, holding the office of Vice-President of the Legal Aid Bank in the Federal District - Brasília for that same time period.
